Who we are
We were established in 1996 to protect and improve the environment. We have around 10,600 employees. Our head office is in Bristol and we have another office in London. We have offices across England, divided into 16 areas.
The Suffolk area is part of our South East Division and is in the area – Essex Norfolk and Suffolk

- treatment of contaminated land
- water quality and resources
- fisheries
- inland river, estuary and harbour navigations
- conservation and ecology

- work with businesses and other organisations to manage the use of resources
- increase the resilience of people, property and businesses to the risks of flooding and coastal erosion
- protect and improving water, land and biodiversity
- improve the way we work as a regulator to protect people and the environment and support sustainable growth
The research team is part of the Evidence Directorate. Our work includes:
- providing expert scientific and technical advice, reports and guidance
- determining scientific priorities for the Environment Agency
- making sure we have the right research in place to meet current and future needs
- providing a chemical regulatory service on behalf of the UK Government
- identifying future issues and problems and assessing their significance
- developing innovative approaches and tools to solve environmental problems
- supporting incident response

- collapsed or badly damaged river banks
- damage or danger to the natural environment
- dead fish or fish gasping for air
- flooding from main rivers or the sea
- illegal removals from watercourses
- incidents at Environment Agency-regulated waste sites
- main rivers blocked by a vehicle or fallen tree causing risk of flooding
- poaching or illegal fishing
- pollution to water or land
- unusual changes in river flow
